The Beatles Live 1965

First published 1985.

The early part of 1965 was mainly taken up with the filming and recording of the ‘Help!’ LP and film. So until June of that year the Beatles made few live performances except for their Christmas shows at the Hammersmith Odeon in January and various TV shows where they were seen promoting, for instance ‘Ticket To Ride’ on ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’. The first live show of the year was in the NME poll winners concert at the Empire Pool, Wembley on April 11th. A European tour followed starting on June 20th until July 3rd.

June 20th – Palais de Sports, Paris

This show is unusual because of an audience consisting mainly males!! This can be heard by the lack of screaming and the abundance of sing-a-long voices albeit with a French accent! Also vain attempts at French can be heard by Paul and George. A very good quality recording exists, probably due to the lack of screaming voices!!

Track Listing:

  • Twist And Shout
  • She’s A Woman
  • Ticket To Ride
  • Can’t Buy Me Love
  • I’m A Loser
  • I Wanna Be Your Man
  • A Hard Days Night
  • Baby’s In Black
  • Rock And Roll Music
  • Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby
  • Long Tall Sally

Later on the same tour …

June 24th – Velodrome Vigonelli, Milan

A 10 minute EP exists of three tracks plus an Italian TV interview, all of which are fairly good quality.

Track Listing:

  • She’s A Woman
  • Twist And Shout
  • I’m A Loser

To promote their new single ‘Help!’ the Beatles appear on ‘Blackpool Night Out’.

August 1st – ABC Theatre, Blackpool – ABC TV

Hosted by Mike and Bernie Winters this show featured the Beatles in sketches with the hosts plus six new songs. ‘Yesterday’ was played live for the first time anywhere which caused a strange reaction amongst the fans who did not know whether to scream or not!! An organ was used on stage for the first time also.

Track Listing:

  • Beside The Seaside
  • I Feel Fine
  • I’m Down
  • Act Naturally
  • Ticket To Ride
  • Yesterday
  • Help!

An excellent quality recording can be found.

The Beatles 3rd American Tour started on August 14th in New York and ran until the 31st of that month. On 19th August they played in Houston. A double LP exists of that show which is one of the era, along side the recording of the Shea Stadium concert a week earlier. The LP consists of the afternoon and evening shows at the Sam Houston Coliseum.

August 19th – Sam Houston Coliseum, Houston, Texas

Two days later on 21st an EP was recorded but not just of the concert but of the pre-concert press conference also. As well as 3 tracks from the Minneapolis show an interview with Police Chief Dwyer was included where he is uncomplimentary towards the Beatles behaviour in a local motel after the show. Anyhow it is of excellent quality.
